You brush. You floss. You show up for every cleaning. And you still walk out with another cavity, or gums that bleed, or breath you can't fix no matter what you buy.
Saliva testing is a quick, painless, spit-based check that measures the bacteria driving cavities and gum disease, how well your saliva protects your teeth, and your personal risk, often before you feel a thing. At Opal Dental Studio in Huntersville, NC, we use it as a risk-assessment tool alongside your exam and X-rays to answer one question: why does this keep happening to your mouth?
Two people can follow the exact same routine and end up with completely different mouths. One gets a cavity every year; the other hasn't had one since high school. The difference usually isn't effort. It's what's living in your saliva, and how well your saliva fights back. Saliva testing is how we find out, so we're working from data instead of a guess.
Most patients who ask us about saliva testing didn't come in asking for a test. They came in frustrated, doing everything right while their mouth refused to cooperate.
If any of these sound familiar, saliva testing might be for you:
None of that means you're failing at brushing. It usually means something underneath is working against you, and a saliva test helps us see exactly what.
Tell us what you are seeing. Book a no-pressure visit with Dr. Gonzales. We will look at what is going on, talk through your options, and help you decide whether testing makes sense for you.
Saliva does more than most people realize. All day it washes away food, neutralizes acid, fights bacteria, and helps rebuild the surface of your teeth. When it's doing that job well, you can get away with a lot. When it isn't, even excellent brushing can't fully make up the difference.
A saliva test looks at what's actually in your mouth and how protective your saliva is. You spit into a small tube, and your sample is analyzed for the specific bacteria and risk factors that drive decay and gum disease. At Opal Dental Studio, we use the SimplyPerio salivary test, analyzed in a certified lab. Think of it as a fitness test for your mouth: a clear baseline, so your care is built on your numbers rather than a general guess.
The SimplyPerio panel looks at the real drivers behind decay and gum disease. Dr. Gonzales reviews your results with you, so the plan targets what's actually going on.
No prep, no discomfort, and no mystery. Here's exactly what happens.
The test is most useful when it answers a real question, so we start with what's frustrating you.
A quick spit into a small tube. That's the whole patient experience.
Every sample goes to the SimplyPerio lab. Turnaround varies, so we schedule an analysis call to review your results, or go over them at your next treatment visit.
We walk you through what your numbers mean and build a plan around your actual risk instead of a generic one.
We want to be straight with you, because your health matters more than any test.
As of 2025, there are no FDA-approved salivary diagnostic tests for diagnosing gum disease, cavities, or oral cancer on their own. So we don't use saliva testing to diagnose anything by itself. We use it as a risk-assessment tool, one piece of the puzzle alongside your exam, your X-rays, and your history.
That distinction matters. A saliva test can show that your cavity-causing bacteria are very high. It can't tell us you have a cavity; the exam does that. Together they give a far fuller picture than either does alone. Samples are analyzed in certified labs held to the same standards as medical bloodwork, so the analysis is solid. The honest limit is in what the test is allowed to predict, and we'll never oversell it.
Testing is most valuable when it answers a real question about your mouth. Dr. Gonzales helps you decide whether it will actually change your plan.
Our standard is to make saliva testing part of everyone's care, the same way we take X-rays: a routine baseline that helps us catch problems early and plan around your real risk.

We'll always go over the cost with you before running anything, and if it won't change your treatment, we'll say so.
Can reduce the cost of ongoing care, especially for patients without traditional insurance.
See Our Wellness PlanRepeat cavities despite good brushing usually trace back to high levels of cavity-causing bacteria, low saliva flow, or saliva that doesn't neutralize acid well. Great brushing can't always overcome those on its own. A saliva test shows which factor is working against you so we can target it directly.
Part of your cavity risk is inherited, including your saliva's makeup and enamel strength, and the cavity-causing bacteria families often share can pass between people. Inherited risk doesn't mean you're stuck with bad teeth. Knowing your specific risk from a saliva test is how you get ahead of it.
No. You simply spit into a small tube, and it takes about a minute.
Some lab-based saliva tests screen for HPV, which is linked to certain oral cancers, but saliva testing is not a standalone cancer diagnosis. A visual and physical oral cancer screening at your exam is still the standard, and anything suspicious is referred for evaluation.
Every sample is analyzed by the lab, and turnaround times vary. Once your results are back, we schedule an analysis call or review them together at your next treatment visit.
