Your Dentist
Often Sees It First

Most people visit a dentist before they visit a doctor. That makes your dental visit more than a cleaning. It's often the first place where patterns, risks, and early warning signs get noticed and addressed.

Dr. Gonzales approaches preventive care the way it should work: identifying what could become a problem before it does, and building a plan that puts you in control of your own health outcomes rather than just reacting when something goes wrong.

Patients typically come in for one of four reasons:

  • They recently moved and are establishing care in the area
  • It's been longer than planned, and they're ready to get back on track
  • Something feels different: sensitivity, bleeding, discomfort, or a change they can't ignore
  • They want a dentist they can actually trust with honest guidance and a clear plan

Whatever brings you in, the goal is the same. Understand where things stand, predict what's coming, and give you the tools to stay ahead of it.

What Happens at a Dental Exam and Cleaning

Your mouth doesn't work in isolation. A comprehensive exam looks at the full picture: bone, gums, teeth, bite, jaw function, and your medical history. Understanding how those systems interact is what makes prevention actually work. It's where any aesthetic goal begins, too.

Step 1: A Focused Dental Exam

Dr. Gonzales examines your teeth, existing dental restorations like fillings and crowns, and signs of wear from your bite. She’ll also review any discomfort, sensitivity, or changes you’ve noticed since your last visit. This step helps identify small issues early.

We utilize tools such as intraoral photos and diagnostic imaging to show you what we see during your exam. Opal Dental Studio is home to advanced technology to make diagnosing accurate and transparent with digital radiographs, photography, CBCT, and a 3D scanner to show you a model of your mouth.

Note: When imaging is needed, we follow ALARA principles, meaning we take the lowest level of imaging necessary to gather useful clinical information. This can depend on your cavity and bone loss rate.

Step 2: Gum Health and Inflammation Screening

Your gums are carefully evaluated to measure overall gum health. This includes looking for bone loss, inflammation, bleeding, recession, or areas that may need closer attention.

You’ll also talk through home care to support effective oral health habits that fit your lifestyle.

If bone loss or gum disease is evident, the next steps are explained clearly and addressed thoughtfully, with no pressure.

Step 3: Professional Cleaning and Polish

The cleaning removes plaque and buildup that brushing and flossing can’t reach. Teeth are then smoothed and polished so the surface is renewed and refreshed.

This step supports both comfort and long-term oral health, especially when done consistently.

Step 4: Your Prevention Plan Going Forward

Before you leave, you’ll review a clear prevention plan. This includes:

  • At-home tips
  • What to watch between visits
  • What may need attention now versus later
  • When to return based on your individual risk and history

You’ll leave knowing where things stand and what comes next, without guessing.

How Often Should You Get Exams and Cleanings

There isn’t a single schedule that works for everyone. Preventive care is most effective when it’s tailored to how your mouth responds over time rather than a fixed calendar rule.

Many patients do well with exams and cleanings about twice a year. Others benefit from more frequent visits depending on factors like plaque and build-up rate, gum health, cavity risk, medical conditions, and past dental history. The right cadence is based on what helps you stay healthy between visits.

Who May Need More Frequent Preventive Care

You may benefit from coming in more often if you have:

  • A history of gum disease
  • Frequent cavities or dry mouth
  • Heavy buildup between visits
  • Complex dental work that needs closer monitoring

Dr. Gonzales will prescribe a schedule that fits your risk profile and helps keep small issues from turning into bigger ones.

Standard Cleanings, Deep Cleanings, and Periodontal Maintenance in Huntersville, NC

Not all cleanings are the same. The type of cleaning is based on the current condition of your bone and gums, and what will support them going forward.

When a routine cleaning fits

A routine cleaning works well when gums are generally healthy, and buildup stays near the surface of the teeth. This type of visit focuses on maintenance, comfort, and keeping things stable between exams.

When we discuss deeper gum care

Deeper gum care comes into the conversation when there are signs of uncontrolled inflammation below the gumline, causing bone loss. This may include deeper pocketing, persistent bleeding, or buildup that routine cleanings cannot fully address. The goal is to reduce bone loss, inflammation, and support healing before it progresses.

We’ll explain what we’re seeing and why it matters before we proceed.

Prevention Options We May Discuss

Fluoride, Hydroxyapatite, and Cavity Prevention

We look at your individual risk factors, such as:

○ History of cavities
○ dry mouth
○ diet
○ home care habits

From there, we may discuss preventive support like topical fluoride or nano-hydroxyapatite varnish. The goal is to provide clarity on protective options that fit your situation and align with your needs and preferences.

Screening and Early Detection

During routine visits, we also check the soft tissues of your mouth, throat, and neck for changes that don’t belong. When appropriate, Dr. Gonzales may use VELscope to support early detection and guide next steps if anything looks unusual.

Dental Exams and Cleanings Financing, Insurance, and Planning

The finances of an exam and cleaning depend on a few simple factors:

  • Whether you are new or established with the practice
  • What level of cleaning fits your current gum health
  • Whether any additional diagnostics are needed

We can estimate coverage and file insurance claims when applicable. CareCredit is available for patients who want payment flexibility.

We also offer a Dental Wellness Plan, which supports preventive care and can help reduce the cost of exams, cleanings, and ongoing maintenance for patients without traditional dental insurance.
